Better Day /// Mayflow

Mayflow is a European based duo born during the COVID lockdown, consisting of producer Mayford Fox and vocalist Lowkey. “Better Day” is a creative mixture of ethereal synth plucks and pads that sit nicely over intricate drum programming, setting the stage for Lowkey’s washed and gentle vocals swimming over the track.

The production and songwriting here is really well done. The syncopated percussion and growling synth bass underneath will get some bone in your body moving, if not all possible ligaments. The sound design is pretty and meditative. Lowkey’s harmonic vocals take you on a ride through “Better Day” as it slowly progresses towards a grooving outro that offers a rewarding climax of electronic production. There are elements of 2 Step, Downtempo, Drum and Bass, and Trance sprinkled all throughout the track. The groove really finds its apex in the outro and you can feel the anxious nature of running out of time as themes of presence and living now are subtly expressed through Lowkey’s lyrics.

The song does a really good job in using Lowkey’s voice to reach different octaves and frequencies with natural harmonies and pitch shifting effects. Working a relationship and dealing with the ups and downs is very relatable and the duo really do create a sonic juxtaposition of that experience, even if it’s a subjective interpretation on my part, there seems to be an intentional formation within the song structure that has context.

“Better Day” is a nice tune that offers what this collaboration may have in store going forwards. There’s no better day to start following Mayflow and I’m eager to hear what’s next from this new duo.
