All Things Down To You /// Lapels

UK rock band, Lapels, takes on a poppier sound with their second single, “All Things Down To You.” The band’s debut single, “Warning Lights,” was slanted towards the dour, alternative rock sound. This follow-up combines a pop-oriented sound with a straight ahead rock style to form a well-rounded, second effort.

At first, this track relies on a twangy element before delving into the full pop rock sound. Lead singer Nathan’s echoing vocals swirl around the melody, centering on the same refrain of “Gotta get a move on!” Despite this call to action, the melody wanders along with an easy, breezy flow during the first half. Thus far, Lapels feels like they are comfortable constructing pop melodies with undercurrents of rock elements.

However, after a sudden hush, Lapels disposes of the pop rock motif for a transition to some rockin’, lightning sharp riffs. Just after the midway point, wailing guitar and percussive thrashing elevate the melody to what amounts to a thorough ruckus when compared to the walk in the park quality it once had. Relative to the track’s front half, it is ushered out on an unruly, rockin’ note.

“All Things Down To You” blends pop and rock elements to make a composite rock track. During the first portion, the listener is deep into pop rock territory with a subtle, toe tapping melody that is easily digestible. However, the jolting emergence of a distinctly rock n’ roll sound gives it new life. Together, Lapels swings between both ends of the spectrum with ease.
