Green Light /// North Ship

Danish rock band, North Ship, delivers a trance inducing, serene sound with their latest single, “Green Light.” While it does tinker with a borderline, psychedelic melody, this track is a smooth, relaxing listen from start to finish.

At the core of this track is the repeating mantra of “Green light. Free your mind” from lead singer Tom Golzen. It is a simple message, but it is emphasized with each echoing refrain into the ether. This effective method of induction loops over and over throughout the track. As a result, this earworm of calming, steady vocals burrows into your mind and overtakes your train of thought.

Throughout “Green Light,” there is a submerged sensation that emanates from both the vocals and melody alike. The longer it is played, the more you feel yourself slip under its surface. Resolute drums keep time alongside an echoing, dreamy guitar, allowing for a slow, easy drift into a sea of relaxation. Melodically, this track is awash with a subtle, sinking feeling, but it provides enough oxygen to sustain its life.

While North Ship does not go over the top with its psychedelic melody, they do enough to bring about a hint of that particular ambiance. On “Green Light,” there are no wild swings or variations in noise, or cluttered cacophonies of sound. That level of melodic experimentation is not necessary to bring about the soothing sound that North Ship provides. However, what they do bring to the table is an easy listening, chill melody that does not need sonic theatrics.
