Highway Boys /// Anne Bennett

Anne Bennett’s ‘Highway Boys’ is a spellbinding dream pop track. Born and Raised in Salem, Massachusetts (the Halloween Capital of the world), her music has a haunting and mysterious element that captivates the listener. Bennett draws inspiration from her hometown and vintage style, which is certainly noticeable in her visuals and in her music.

The song begins with a dreamy guitar and drum beat, followed by Bennetts’s sultry vocals. The song picks up the pace in the chorus when the explosive synth comes in, and Bennett’s strong vocals shine through. The clapping sounds after the second verse also give it a dynamic feel alongside the hypnotic instrumental. The lyrics describe Bennett being enticed by Highway Boys, “they drive into the sunset and leave behind what they’ve destroyed.” This goes hand in hand with Bennett’s description of the song where she states that “Highway Boys is about freedom and living on the edge, escaping the past and the mundane.” Throughout the song, she proclaims she wants to “be the queen of the highways boys,” in other words to join them in their adventurous and free lifestyles.

The instrumental gives off an otherworldly, haunting sound that provides a satisfying listening experience. With Halloween coming up, it’s also a great song to add to your Halloween playlists, or any collection of eerie, spooky songs. Overall, this is a great track, and if you like dream pop, shoegaze, or just all things witchy – you should give Highway Boys a listen!
