Slowglider /// The Shrubs

The Shrubs are a Psychedelic rock duo from Texas. With “Slowglider”, the duo displays a strong control of its genre in both the songwriting and execution. With its solid mix and performances, “Slowglider” is an impressive introduction to the Texan band.

“Slowglider” has a relaxed tone in its timbre that fits well with the reverberated mix complimenting the tasteful qualities of the Alt-Rock/80s/Psychedelic fused genres. The acoustic guitars are mixed and produced to the right genre related template and the vocal harmonies all sit far away, dissipating into a pretty soundbed that is easy to digest.

The songwriting is really well done, never allowing “Slowglider” to feel repetitive as new elements and sections provide pleasant chord changes. The song also rewards its listener with new elements, introducing piano and synthesizers at appropriate sections of the composition. The drum and bass establish a nice foundational groove and everything seems to be glued together really well for a pleasantly easy listen.

The Shrubs have certainly established a nice nostalgic tune that feels like it could have been released in multiple decades and at no point does it ever feel gimmicky. The authentic sound could easily be mistaken for a number of bands from the 60s, 70s, or 80s. What makes the song stand out is its memorable chorus that always feels nice when it makes its return. The song concludes with a beautiful outro of the hook lyric repeating with all the elements except the drums and bass. When it ends, it’s hard to not want to play the tune again.

We look forward to what The Shrubs have in store going forward. For fans of Psychedelic/Alt-Rock, this one is a treat.
