Save Me /// Motel Midnight

Motel Midnight is a trio from New Zealand that fuses indie-rock music with synth-pop to create both a retro and refreshing sound, delivering a fun style oof audio goodness. Whether you’re listening on headphones or on a dance floor, they will make you move. With “Save Me”, the band gives us a catchy, anthemic tune that is surely bound to stay stuck somewhere in your head.

The trio consists of Reuben Keeling (vocals, bass guitar), Bruce Ferguson (vocals, guitar), and Ben Stanley (synths, beats, production). You can hear all of their contributions equally as each of their footprints is laid on the song.

With a four on the floor beat and smoothly produced bass guitar, a pulsating piano rhythm lays on top, establishing the core groove throughout the song which serves as its energetic drive. Effected guitars and synthesizers layer “Save Me” appropriately to add to its playful spirit.  This compositional choice creates space for the main hook, where the vocals feel like a group chant worth joining in on. This song definitely has all the ingredients to be a hit for a live audience.

The synthesizers automate, adding a nice touch to its timbre towards the end of the song. The reverberation pushes the synths back, creating an ethereal spacious ambiance to get lost in as the song unwinds. We appreciate what they’ve done with the songwriting, inviting audiences to enjoy both the instrumental bed as well as the vocally led sections. In just a little over three minutes, Motel Midnight is able to pack in a memorable number that will demand repeats due to its quirky addictive nature that was once more prevalent within rock music during previous decades.

“Save Me” is a nice introduction for us and we look forward to what more the New Zealand band has in store for the future. For those seeking a fun indie-rock song, “Save Me” won’t disappoint.
