New York “puck rock” band Two Man Advantage bring us a version of their song, “Headhunting,” recorded live from the iconic CBGB back in 2002. The testosterone-filled track – an ode to the NHL goons beloved for laying people out on the ice – is classic, pedal-to-the-metal punk rock from start to finish.
It’s the pure expression of one’s inner aggression, as well as the general disregard for formalities that makes punk rock the perfect soundtrack to the art of headhunting. Moshers and headhunters alike seek to release their aggression in a violent way and if you get in their way, don’t be surprised if you come out of it with a black eye. “Look out!/He’s gonna kill you!” This guy is not interested in the puck, he wants your head. The rawness of the band’s live performance is a beautiful thing, and it can only come from a group of rockers who are fully committed to their art.
Given their hard-edged sound and raw energy, the band’s chemistry and the tightness of their performance is jaw-dropping. Punk music is very forgiving of the artistic sloppiness that is characteristic of the genre’s DIY approach. But with “Headhunting,” the band exhibits a precision that often gets taken for granted. With every member constantly bulldozing ahead at full speed, no one ever falls behind or drops a beat – it’s really a masterclass in rhythm and locking into a groove.
Included on their recent album, DCxPC Live Presents: Two Man Advantage, this live track is short but it warrants repeated listening. With brute force and hostile energy, Two Man Advantage have created a proper anthem for headhunters worldwide.
