Maybe /// Jon Sandman

Like it or not, we are influenced by our own past experiences. Instead of greeting a new relationship with clear eyes, our vision can be blurred by apprehension. Or, as the old adage says, “once bitten, twice shy.” “Maybe,” the latest single by singer-songwriter Jon Sandman, is an atmospheric, soft rock tune that is largely consumed by reluctance, but leaves the door open for hope.

Setting the stage, a series of hollow piano notes provide a ghostly echo, reinforcing a growing state of solitude. Eventually, the pitter patter of light drums join the fray to complete an airy melody. Combined with Sandman’s hushed, yet contemplative vocals, a sense of internal deliberation takes root. It reminds you of those quiet times when your mind wanders down every avenue, searching for the elusive exit of an endless maze. Instead of spiraling out, Sandman tactfully lays out his emotional coordinates as he weighs whether or not to venture onward with a new relationship.

At every turn, the specter of self-doubt rears its ugly head. Sandman convinces himself that his potential love interest will only “whisper into my ear only words I want to hear.” In his view, “the scope of love is deceptively large.” As the concept of real love proves evasive, Sandman falls back into the familiar trappings of someone who hasn’t “had much luck in love.”

However, there is a glimmer of hope. Despite being made “just a little bit crazy,” “maybe” keeps popping up to offer a shade of optimism. “Maybe we can make this work” and “maybe this may be a good thing” are the mantras of someone who hasn’t completely closed off. After Sandman’s sifted through his self-doubt, maybe is as close to confident as he gets.

“Maybe” explores the depths of self-doubt and arises with a hopeful resolution. At first, the trepidation is palpable in every uneasy sentiment by Sandman. In the end, he gets to a happier, albeit cautious place. As old wounds heal, progressive steps are taken towards the next chapter yet to be written.
