Wonder Woman /// D’Lee

Encouraged by a sense of destiny and a reverence for a pantheon of superheroes, country artist D’Lee’s new single, “Wonder Woman” forms great aspirations of being selfless. In addition, “Wonder Woman” is about fulfilling a need to broaden your own horizons.

Stylistically, “Wonder Woman” is in the archetype mold of a country ballad. Of course, there’s the familiar presence of acoustics, steel guitar whispers and methodically pitter pattering drums. At first, a distinctly relaxed tempo settles into place, putting the focus squarely on the narrative first and foremost.

In part, “she gazed at the stars and knew there was a plan” speaks to finding a method to the madness such as connecting the dots in the night sky to create constellations. In turn, the superhero universe can make more logical sense than real life. In the context of “Wonder Woman,” D’Lee intertwines “courage like a cape” into the narrative to link both worlds together.

There is a stark contrast between the parting lyric of the first chorus, “she’d save the land,” compared to D’Lee having “found the courage to find her place because she’s the one that she had to save.” On one hand, there’s an air of confidence about how much of a difference one person can make. On the other hand, “Wonder Woman” reflects on approaching a now or never stage in your life.
