beyond lines – Leaving

‘Leaving’ works with a bass drum-driven percussion and an electric guitar bounce that fills with more sound and life as things move on. This track is dynamic from section to section, and the vocals work with powerful belts and bends that work with a lot of emotion. It has an indie rock energy and lyrically explores harder emotions. It’s about heartbreak and the want to stick in a relationship, even when the other party wants to leave. “Your heart is in pieces / Your eyes are looking straight through me / I’ll get to my knees and / It’ll keep you from leaving,” the lyrics resound. It seems to be a tale of hurting another and begging for forgiveness and love.

Fuzz Collective – Alive

‘Alive’ comes from Fuzz Collective’s debut album “One”. This track has a funky and jazzy feel to it with some rock undertones. The vocals have this anthemic soul feel, and though it’s fresh, it leaves a nostalgic feeling to its sound. The percussion drives the instrumentation, though the guitars spatter in, and there’s even some intricate harmonica in the mix. Speaking of the harmonica; it has a solo in the latter half of the track that shows so much prowess. This track goes into the story of the father of frontman Jeff Yasuda. His father was put into an internment camp in World War 2, and this track uses optimism to express that no one should be incarcerated due to ethnicity or skin tone.

Sarah Bernstein – The Feel

‘The Feel’ is a pop-based track with some dreamy indie influences. It has this nice bright and nasally vocal tone with a really nice flow to it. If there’s a word to describe this track, it would be vibey. The synthy instrumentation has such a smooth flow, and the vocals follow suit. That being said, the vocals cut a bit through the smoothness with some punchier sections. Lyrically, it’s about “the feel”, which is expressed in the Sheryl Crow documentary and is basically described as the energy that goes into being a true musician. This idea is creatively implemented into the catchy lyrics.

Chenzo V – Story About Love

‘Story About Love’ is one of those pop tracks that does well at meshing energy and dreaminess to make an emotional soundscape. It has that energy that begs the listener to get up and dance to its infectious energy. The vocals are well produced to fit the electronic sound, and they work in a lower tone and percussive flow. The lyrics stand out as a track about self-empowerment. It’s about putting the self first and expresses, “I don’t wanna hear another story about love.” Basically, it stands out as teaching that self-love is the most important love of all.

UCHAYE – Denial

‘Denial’ works with a strong growly bass riff, well-paced percussion, and thrashy guitars. It has these strong rock influences but the melody brings a bit of a pop twang into things. Though the melody is a bit pop, it doesn’t take away from the rockin growls and bends in the vocals. The vocals also show a lot of diversity in tone and style throughout the track. The production style is a bit softer, but it doesn’t take away from the masterful musicianship. “Don’t you lie imma make you remember me,” a part of the chorus hits in. This track is another one that shows self-empowerment, and it does so in a way that hits the powerful note on the head.

Qori – 1979

‘1979’ is a beautifully soft pop track with dreamy guitars and bass meshed with soft cymbal-based percussion. Then, as the track goes on the energy of things rises and more musical aspects are introduced. Around 4:25, there’s a really nice guitar solo. Overall, the smoothness of the vocals meshes well with the soft buzz of the guitar to make a dreamy soundscape. Like many other tracks here, this one is an ode to confidence. Specifically, it shows empowerment by pushing back against the pressures that society places on aging. It shows that beauty is beauty no matter the age.
