Naturally, we tend to associate champagne with a cause for celebration. It’s primarily reserved for triumphant or joyous occasions. However, in the case of pop artist Shobsy’s single, “Champagne,” its title is a misnomer in of itself. While “Champagne” is atmospherically festive, it is a party song in spirit only. Sonically, good vibes abound, but Shobsy opts to drown away some sorrow, instead.

From the jump, an exclamation of “champagne” rings out as the track opens up with a backdrop of elegant synth accents. Shortly thereafter, it transitions into a strutting soundscape complemented by an elastic bass groove. All in all, “Champagne” operates at a moderate, life of the party level.

However, beneath all of its sonic enthusiasm, “Champagne” resides in the aftermath of rejection. Everyone deals with setbacks differently, but this song is more about the self-destructive cure for what ails your heart. The entire pre-chorus tells the long and short of it: “cause I never was the one you wanted…now I’m picking myself up off the floor.” Aside from illustrating a side effect of reflux, the “champagne” chorus laments that “there’s never enough…champagne” as if it were another hardship to endure. Altogether, “Champagne” delves into the inherent downside of a dicey coping mechanism.

If you’ve ever been jilted enough to numb away your emotional ache, “Champagne” is the song that says you can, but not that you necessarily should. There is a stark contrast between its overarching carefree aesthetic and this track’s undertone of dependency in the face of disappointment.
