Heidi Vincent /// Mean Jolene

Her lyrics informed by a lifetime of lived experience, Vancouver-based country pop artist Heidi Vincent has earned the admiration of fans worldwide through her specific brand of narratively-driven work. Never shying away from allowing herself to be vulnerable through her art, the music she writes exudes sentimentality with every verse as it reflects the human condition as seen through her eyes. Her latest release, Mean Jolene, mirrors these themes in spades as she borrows from Dolly Parton’s 1973 classic, Jolene, and asks the question “What happened after Jolene took her man?”

As the piece begins, a soft acoustic guitar and Vincent’s voice resonantly projects a passionate tone, immediately setting the tone for the emotional ballad, and we feel the world of this music build around us in real time. Shortly after, Vincent begins the narrative, and draws us into the emotional core of the record with the opening line “There he goes, running out the door to you. Your arms wide open. Remember me, we had this talk before, Jolene.” Through her lyrics and undeniably heartfelt delivery, we hang on the artist’s every word as she takes us through a story we all thought we knew up until now.

A track that threads the needle between comfortably nostalgic in its adaptation of the classic idea that all country music needs is three chords and the truth, and a modern flare through its contemporary thematic anchors and the life it breaths into a classic story, the single proves itself as a marquee standout in the artist’s robust and ever-growing repertoire.
