A growing presence in the New York underground indie scene and beyond, Brooklyn-based R&B artist INDVGO has made a name for herself through her music and movement as she continues to seize every opportunity she continues to make for herself. Encapsulating the emotional state of her generation and the human condition as a whole through her work, her message has long been defined by her determination to never shy away from vulnerabilities, and a commitment to honestly express her lived experiences. Her latest single “Slide In” proves itself as a marquee standout in her already robust repertoire as it speaks to the turbulent nature of inconsistent attraction, and an abundant level of self-awareness in setting one’s own boundaries.
The piece begins with a cascade of electronic accouterments that pulsate hypnotically in waves and slowly build to an anthemic crescendo. Sensorially elating, yet grounded in its composition, we feel an ominous sense of anticipation grow through the instrumentality as the music builds. As the artist’s vocals enter and begin the narrative, we feel the weight of the story from the opening line as she expresses the emotional instability of a situationship in flux with her chilling delivery of the opening line “I studied your habits, you vanished. If it’s right, you decide. I manage to keep it cool.”
Shining a mirror up to behavior that so many have chosen to normalize, the single showcases a powerful determination to let go of that which ceases to serve us and prioritize our own selves over what others might gain from our sycophantic inaction.
