Q: What events or people inspired you to create “Small Talk”?
BUEL: The kind of social interactions where I hear the words but can not engage with them because I hesitate their motivations and meanings.
Q: What is the message behind your song?
BUEL: I guess my message is that I’m getting less and less humane because the world feels more and more like a drawing.
Q: Which artists have influenced your music?
BUEL: I guess I was inspired by certain moods a lot. Sometimes some people’s moods really do make me feel like I’m learning a new language to
express myself. I love Nirvana, Morphine, Meredith Monk, Woody Allen.
Q: How has your upbringing influenced your musical style?
BUEL: My musical life started with classical music when my parents got me started to ballet. I had very little personal space growing up and
those angry years I listened to a lot of melodic and heavier stuff
with nihilistic lyrics to keep myself light. Then when I became too
negative and isolated to lift my mood I started to listen to pop
music. So then I think my music was born.
Q: What is the most important thing for you to do during your creative
process?
BUEL: [The most important thing to do is] to think about the things that I don’t like about. Even though it
sounds negative, it helps me get triggered to open the Narnia doors.
Q: What advice would you give upcoming artists?
BUEL: I guess facing yourself and holding your own hand is really important [and] to be resilient and consistent.
