Giya is a singer-songwriter and producer from South London who has toured with Hak Baker, has backing from BBC Introducing, and loves not fitting any mould. Most importantly, she’s an extremely talented artist. “Upside Down” is an extension of her impressive catalogue of great songwriting and production.
“Upside Down” is a smooth, soulful number that is butter in the form of sound waves. The sound spectrum glues and melts together really well with exceptional production that gets the talent treatment of Giya’s phenomenal voice. The song is both ethereal and cool in its funky bass line and tasteful guitar tones. You’ll even get rewarded with an awesome horn section in the end for joining Giya on her three minute and thirteen second journey of the “Upside Down.”
Aside from the phased guitars and crisp and dusty drums, Giya’s vocal ad-libs are delivered with precision both spatially and within the right octaves of the mix. It’s her lyrics in the song though that stand out real unique. There’s ambiguity on what this song is about, but it appears to be an anthem of checking out from situations and just sitting in your space. The song is about a girl and while it isn’t certain Giya is referring to herself, the open endedness sits well with the dreamy, imaginative nature of the tune.
