Am I Gonna Die Now? (album) /// Adam Anglin

Adam Anglin is a musician from Denver, Colorado combining synth indie rock, singer-songwriter, and alt rock to create personal music that is uniquely reflective about the rare genetic syndrome that has become part of his reality. His album titled, “Am I Gonna Die Now?” is a meditation on  what it’s like to live within the uncertainty of his life’s expiration and the result is a beautiful exploration of a man’s psyche.

Adam performs all the instruments on all of the songs. The production varies in genres slightly, but a bridge of acoustic and digital elements seems to be the common thread throughout the tracks. The opening track presents the main theme of the record over a dreamy cinematic vocal performance with light percussion, strings, pads, synths, and choral effects. “Living with the Dead” creates a beat driven bed that is more groove driven. “Ghost” has a pretty guitar riff at the center of the instrumental with SFX scattering at the outer ends of the mix. The backup vocals almost feel ghostly. The pads add a warming layer that ultimately leads to a very beautiful outro of all the elements playing alongside each other, creating an ethereal timbre.

“Don’t Wait Up” has a very catchy main riff. The vocal performance and songwriting has a touch of Bon Iver in it, but never comes off as gimmicky in any way. Where the album feels most memorable is in its DNA of personal lyrics and refreshing songwriting through the various instruments Adam Anglin performs throughout the record. He has great control of his voice and an ear for how his electric guitar, synths, and drums can blend tonally. There are also great melodic moments throughout songs like the second half of “Vampires” where he sings along with the synth line. Almost all the tracks have a beautiful miniature vocal wall of sound that he layers with his voice, pressed gently and tightly in the background. Adam’s use of reverberation throughout his mixes is very well executing in achieving its unique space for his music.

“Am I Gonna Die Now?” is a heartfelt ten track record that is worthy of your time. Everyone has a perspective that is unique to them, but Adam Anglin delivers one that is not only rare, but delivered in a digestible way that is relatable and universal. Whether it’s his journey with life and death or the great songwriting, you’ll find something to love about the record.
