The release of My Fine Companions’ track, “O Daughter”, took place on January 1st of 2022. Nick Kidney and his daughter, Alice, performed as the lead vocalists for this classic tune.
“O Daughter” is a track that is able to keep the definition of what folk music is and how it is able to continue to touch the hearts of those who like to keep it traditional. With the instrumentation to represent the influence of traditional and/or contemporary folk music, it has provided a feel of musical flow through melodies and the lyrics being sung.
Originating from London, England, My Fine Companions were able to put in an endless amount of effort to provide emotions that can make the audience relate to having a child fly from the nest, hoping to start a new chapter in their lives in the real world. According to lessthan1000followers.com, “O Daughter” was inspired by the fact that Alice, Nick’s daughter, had since departed from the family home. For Kidney, being far away from his daughter made him think about the relationship between him and her, his wife, and his mother (lessthan1000followers.com).
The melodies were not the only noteworthy aspect of “O Daughter.” The melody was melodic and original. Nick and Alice have a warm and rich vocal tone as they put real feelings into the lyrics. The lyrics are meaningful and clever with some expressive phrases. The instrument(s) provided a wonderful sound that has been able to tell a personal backstory, making the track feel like the audience is bound to take a journey through one’s point of view. Overall, the song is well-shaped and tuneful, and I think it has the potential to reach the hearts of those who relate to having their child or children leave the nest to embark on the real world.
