On a daily basis, we are inundated with noise. This is not reserved to your neighbor’s howling canine or nearby clamoring construction. Instead, it is the cacophonous cavalcade of voices that permeate our minds every day. In today’s society of influencers and talking heads, it is enough to drive a person up the proverbial wall. As a result, we wish that we can block out the noise from all angles. Nashville-based alternative rock band eighty six press have arrived with their debut single, “New Noise,” a gritty, bluesy tune that seeks solace from everyone else’s bleating babble.
The trio of lead singer/guitarist Eric Vattima, guitarist Jake Turner and drummer Arquel Riviera have produced a blues-inspired, steely sounding rock that could only come from Music City. The heartbeat of “New Noise” originates with Riviera’s tick tock drum pattern and progresses into rounds of hardy guitar riffs. Altogether, it becomes synonymous with the roots rock sound of Nashville. You can pick up on hints of country-style and garage rock along with some blues-inspired influences.
Aside from the unique sound that this band has created, the theme of this tune focuses on blocking out all of the outside noise that threatens to invade your headspace. Vattima opens up with this red eyed, worrisome opening salvo: “Maybe I don’t want to sleep tonight. Because every time I close my eyes, I always get so terrified of whether I’ll wake up.” In spite of this, he is at his calmest, vocally. Instead, during each chorus, Vattima wails with incredible angst about not wanting to “believe these little things” because they only produce “new noise!” All in all, it’s about having a resolute determination to not get caught up in the static of other people’s chatter.
Combining a rocksteady melody and heartfelt vocals, eighty six press have come out swinging with this debut. This “New Noise” finds its roots in many hard scrabble genres and forms its own tough brand of rock.
