Setting out on his own, Jason Pritchett’s alternative rock project, Fleck Projector, has arrived with a debut single entitled “Phoenix.” For almost three decades, the Vancouver, Canada musician has been a jack of all trades, including the songwriter for various bands. Now, Pritchett has emerged with a highly combustible jam.
For this single, Pritchett called in drummer Kellli Scott from alt-rock band, Failure. Combined with heavy doses of bass, guitar and accents of synth, the pair have concocted a volatile melody. Much like its namesake, “Phoenix” rises from the ashes with a fiery mentality.
At times, this tune is workmanlike in its approach. All of the melodic elements work together at a unified, mechanical pace. In turn, Pritchett’s contemplative mood pairs up with the spinning gears that drive this melody along.
However, there are times when this track is not as orderly. Upon each chorus, you are engulfed by an inferno of bass and drums. Between stretches of methodical notes, everything begins to fire on all cylinders.
Beyond all of the sonic strategies, Pritchett is lost in thought. Through all of the turmoil, he pleads “let me out” at the onset of each incendiary chorus. Rebirth is the end result, leading Pritchett to proclaim “I am now the change!”
Order and rage are the two worlds that “Phoenix” resides in. On one side, the melody leads with a purpose to keep everything in balance. On the flip side, there is a flame ready to reduce it all to cinders.
