When’s the last time a pop song made you stop dead in your tracks because it was drenched in just downright dirty, disgusting funk? The answer is ‘today,’ because “Bitter Bitch” from DMV artist Helen is just that – a dance-pop track so funky it would make Chaka Khan blush.
There’s not much to this song – a heavy, thumping bass/drum loop, handclaps, the occasional synth accent. Sometimes that’s all you need, and it’s more than enough for this song to get your neck moving. Not to mention Helen’s sexy/bubbly/sultry/playful voice that Gwen Stefani wished she had. Her voice is the kind that can linger in your head all day and you’ll still beg for more. Her voice together with this track is like Jordan & Pippen – Helen is clearly MJ.
The song speaks about being yourself despite how others may perceive you. Helen is aware that people may dismiss her as bitter, but she can hardly be bothered because she knows she’s way out of their league anyway. We’re in the midst of an era in pop where women are finding their voices and thriving – Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, we could go on and on. Helen is trying to earn her seat at this table and right now the sky’s the limit.
Helen’s only glaringly obvious mistake on “Bitter Bitch” – it’s barely two minutes long. A groove this funky could go on for days and that still wouldn’t be long enough. Do yourself a favor and put this song in your rotation immediately, as well as anything else with Helen’s name on it because she’s a rising star who has got something truly magical.
