Q: “Sun” encompasses the bittersweet feelings of moments coming to an end; the melancholic instrumental along with your profound lyrics create this nostalgic, yet calm feeling. Walk me through your creative process in making “Sun”.
Nightingale: Thematically I first had the idea last summer. I was appreciating the time I had with friends and family and felt grateful for what I had in my life. This set in motion some lines and melodies that I recorded in my voice memo app. I then started to experiment with different chord progressions on my acoustic guitar and then basically took that to Ableton. There were some challenges initially as to what direction (production wise) it needed to go, and I played with different synths, beats and tempos. It was all a matter of discovery and patience to be honest!
Q: What are you hoping listeners take away from listening to “Sun”?
Nightingale: To be appreciative and grateful for the relationships you value the most and recognise how important it is in our lives!
Q: “Sun” has such a compelling sound that it was made to perform live. Have you performed this track yet? If not, what are you most looking forward to when you do?
Nightingale: I’m glad that comes across! I’m pleased to say that I’ll be performing it live with a band in my next headline gig here in Melbourne on May 28. I’m looking forward to hearing it played loud with my live guitar and drums – these two instruments give off such big ‘live’ energy to me.
Q: How did Covid-19 affect the way you make music? Do you think it made you more creative or did being alone make it harder to create?
Nightingale: The lockdowns gave me more time which in turn gave me space to be creative and commit to releasing consistently. So I think it had a net positive impact in the way I make music I that regard – I had always wanted more time!
Q: Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as a musician?
Nightingale: I think it was a bit more of an accumulation of different moments over time that confirmed it. If there was one point, it was a few years ago when I was feeling a bit drained by my day job and I reflected on what truly gave me joy and feel fulfilled. After a lot of reflecting and planning, I made a decision to take it above a hobby and pursue it!
Q: What is coming up next for you?
Nightingale: More releases and live shows! Come to my shows if you’re in Melbourne, otherwise keep your eyes peeled for any tour announcements.
Q: Parting words to your fans?
Nightingale: Big thanks for inspiring me to keep going. Hope to meet you at a show one day!
