For those of us who are unattached, we adapt to being an individual. At times, we may feel more comfortable as a single than as part of a couple. However, even the most calloused of hearts can be softened up to the idea. In those moments of self-reflection, we can see our way beyond the solitary path and move forward towards sharing life with another. Nick Cheshire of alt-rock project, Indigo Daydream, has returned with “Never Minded Being Alone (but Lately),” a haunting, atmospheric rock sound that leaves a cloud of introspection in its wake.
After entertaining us with songs centered on metaphysical ruminations about reality, Cheshire delves into something more intrinsic to all of us: human connection. Shedding off the psychedelic veneer for this single, he substitutes in an echo chamber of sound to simulate the hollow existence of being alone. When you’re alone, your voice ricochets off inanimate objects, who are incapable of reply. Cheshire captures a remote level of solitude by bouncing around his ghostly melody and his own wistful vocals all across the soundscape.
Simply put, Cheshire resolves that he’s “never minded being alone” with the caveat of “but lately.” He leaves the window open a crack to allow a breath of fresh air to enter his life. All he wants is “for somebody to notice, just notice me.” To be seen, can make all the difference in the world. All of this boils down to meaningful human connection via a plea to “hold me close, don’t let go, is what I live for.”
With this latest single, Cheshire tackles the personal with the same aplomb as he does the abstract. “Never Minded Being Alone (but Lately)” is a melodic departure from what we’ve become accustomed to, but the same level of artistic ingenuity remains.
