Leave Me Alone /// Movment

In the nick of time for Halloween, Irish post-punk project, Movment have released a chilling single entitled, “Leave Me Alone.” The dark and dreary melody on this track is befitting of a horror movie villain’s own soundtrack.

An eerie feeling populates “Leave Me Alone” from beginning to end. From the very beginning, the industrial guitar sound brings about a foreboding feeling. Melodically alone, it feels like there is an impending terror on the horizon. A dark and dank sensation hangs over the entirety of this song.

To ramp up the uneasiness, singer Martin Kelly’s vocals emit a chilling sensation all of their own. This is apparent upon each refrain of “leave me alone” during each chorus. Each time, Kelly calls out in a psychotic fit. In conjunction, the deep guitar and drum combination emanates a very high level of tension.

The prevailing theme of this track seems to center on psychosis. “Cold, vacant, empty eyes,” Kelly sings, leaving the impression that the subject of this song is not all there. Later on, Kelly questions “is this a body at my feet or just a dream I can’t escape?” On top of it all, the haunting melody remains constant throughout much of this track. There is nowhere to escape the terror inducing feeling that “Leave Me Alone” creates.

The conclusion of this track finds its only vast change in melody. “Leave Me Alone” closes on a haunting, up and down tempo coming from the bass played by Kevin Kelly. As a result, the listener’s pulse quickens from the suddenly rapid pace.

If you want to listen to something to set the mood for your horror movie marathon this Halloween, “Leave Me Alone” would be a fitting option.
